About This Place

Nestled just steps away from the British Museum, Tea and Tattle is a charming tea house and café that offers a cozy refuge from the bustling streets of London’s Great Russell Street. This basement hideaway, tucked beneath a quaint bookshop, invites guests to slow down and savor an authentic, comforting afternoon tea experience rich with traditional British flair.

At Tea and Tattle, the culinary focus is on simple, fresh fare done with care and flair—perfectly complemented by a thoughtfully curated selection of teas. Their menu spotlights a range of delightful fresh salads, each thoughtfully crafted to satisfy varied palates. From the tender and flavorful Salad with salmon or chicken, to the more delicate Salad with cheese or hummus, every dish is vibrant, fresh, and nourishing. For a lighter bite, crispy Danish pastries and classic crisps provide the ideal accompaniment.

Yet, it is their scones that truly steal the show. Served warm with a generous dollop of clotted cream and a choice of intriguing jams—strawberry & black pepper, raspberry and vanilla, or the unique Damson plum—the scones at Tea and Tattle deliver a sublime balance of buttery richness and fluffy texture. This signature offering has won the hearts of visitors like Akiko Colton, who described the scone as "heavenly," and Ronald Shore, who fondly recalls the cozy ambiance and delicious spreads as reminiscent of a beloved, long-lost tea spot.

The atmosphere here exudes intimate charm. The basement setting, with its quiet corners and soft lighting, creates a warm, almost secret haven that invites patrons to unwind and engage in calm conversation or reflective moments over a steaming pot of tea. The staff’s attentive and kind service enhances this feeling of being personally cared for, as noted by several guests including Ria Wooten, who appreciated their accommodation of dietary restrictions without compromising the quality or taste.

For those seeking the quintessential London tea experience away from the tourist throngs or pricey hotel lobbies, Tea and Tattle offers an authentic, unpretentious alternative. Whether you’re indulging in the full "tea room experience” with tiered trays of finger sandwiches, scones, and cakes, or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon snack, this gem offers both comfort and a touch of nostalgia—a rare find in the city.

Overall, Tea and Tattle is more than just a café; it’s a delightful journey into the heart of British tradition wrapped in the welcoming embrace of thoughtful hospitality. If you value a cozy atmosphere, impeccable scones, and a menu that caters to both classic and light, fresh tastes, this tea house is a must-visit for any lover of good food and quiet charm.

Great alternative to the expensive hotel lobby teas. Fabulous scones served with lots of clotted cream and delicious jams, sandwiches, and cake. Cozy atmosphere in the basement under a book shop, across fr The British Museum. It reminded us of a place we found decades ago and then could never find again. Highly recommend for your afternoon repast.

Delightful afternoon tea for one! The staff was very attentive and worked with me to accommodate my dietary restrictions. There aren't many dairy free options available, but it was easy to request the cheese, etc to be left off the sandwiches. Thankfully my allergy isn't too severe, as I don't believe there were any dairy free cake options. But the food was delicious, even without the clotted cream! Such a relaxing and delicious way to spend an hour. I did not have a reservation, but I came by myself well before tea time. If you intend to have a proper tea with a group, make sure to reserve a table!

My wife and I had a most delightful experience here our last full day in London. We had just returned from a week away in Cornwall and wanted to see a bit more of this wonderful city before our flight home the next day. We were lucky enough to walk in off the street and be seated downstairs with just a short wait. We opted for the full 'tea room experience' with a lovely tiered serving tray adorned with finger sandwiches, scones w/ cream & jam plus miniature deserts and a hot kettle of black tea. The entire experience was one which we will not forget soon. A must do while in this great city!

Afternoon Tea was a delight. The desserts and Scones were great. The finger sandwiches were nice. Some of the flavors weren't to my preferences, but they seemed fresh and well-made. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is very quaint and intimate.

Discovered this hidden gem for an affordable afternoon tea in London. Situated in the basement of a bookshop offering titles from around the world is Tea and Tattle. This charming tea parlour is an ideal retreat after a morning at the British Museum, conveniently located just opposite! You can choose between a shared afternoon tea at £38 or opt for £19 each, enjoying tea, sandwiches, scones, and cakes. They even serve a glass of homemade lemonade and a selection of jams.

Lovely little tearoom just downstairs in a collectible bookshop. Made reservations for 3 of us the day before (I believe they're required, it's a small place), and they were very helpful on the phone. Classic afternoon tea set for great prices. Directly across from the British Museum. All the sandwiches and desserts were delicious with a large variety (only got picture of one tray of our two). All our teas were perfectly prepared. Service was quick. Highly recommend!
